Why we should not be afraid to fail

We all love to succeed and when we succeed, some of us like to celebrate our wins on social media, to our colleagues, bosses, friends or family.

Why however are we less likely to celebrate our failures? I would say, we should embrace these moments of failure, learn from our mistakes and use it to better ourselves on a day-to-day basis. The most successful people in the world have made and had more than one setback in their lives, if it were not for their resilience to overcome negative outcomes and poor decisions, these people would not be where they are today.

Oprah Winfrey, who is a billionaire and was the ‘Queen of day-time TV’ and had a known tendency to give away free cars, was fired from her first TV presenter role.

A comedic genius who arguably created the greatest sitcom about nothing, was booed off the stage the first time he performed on stage. This was Jerry Seinfeld of course. Instead of quitting altogether, he decided to go back to the same stage the next night and perform again.

What we can learn from successful people around the world is that they picked themselves up after they fell. If we apply this attitude to our own journey and pick up habits of being patient and pushing past boundaries, we will learn to ‘love’ to fail so that we can succeed.

A way to mitigate failure the next time is to learn from a mentor. A mentor is a professional, a role model or someone we aspire to be. For example, a financial planner can be a mentor and can discuss with you your goals and objectives and work with you to determine strategies that are in your best interest.
In order to succeed, we sometimes have to fail so it is important to manage the risk, minimise the harm, learn from our mistakes, pick ourselves up and rise above it.
I will leave you with a quote from one of the greatest basketballers of all time: “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan
